Where is it?

The Fairy Circles are located in the Namib Desert in western Namibia, primarily in the NamibRand Nature Reserve and the Namib-Naukluft National Park. These mysterious circular patches of bare soil can be found across large stretches of the desert landscape, particularly in the northern part of the desert.

What is it?

Fairy Circles are circular patches of barren land surrounded by vegetation, typically grasses. These circles vary in size, with diameters ranging from a few meters to several meters across, and they are most commonly found in the Namibian desert. The phenomenon has long been a subject of intrigue and speculation, and several theories have been proposed to explain their formation.

One popular theory is that they are caused by termite activity. These termites, known as Macrotermes, dig underground tunnels and create a network of mounds that suppress the growth of vegetation in the area, leaving bare patches. Another theory suggests that these circles are a result of natural plant competition, where plants compete for limited resources like water, leading to the formation of the circles.

Regardless of their exact cause, the Fairy Circles have become one of Namibia's most famous natural features, attracting both tourists and scientists interested in understanding this mysterious desert phenomenon.

Best Time to Visit

  • Dry Season (April to October): The best time to visit the Fairy Circles is during Namibia’s dry season, from April to October, when the weather is cooler and more comfortable for desert exploration.

  • Morning or Late Afternoon: For optimal photography and to avoid the intense midday heat, it's ideal to visit early in the morning or during the late afternoon when the light is softer and the temperature is more moderate.

Tips for the Trip

  • Guided Tours: Exploring the Fairy Circles is best done with a local guide or tour operator, as they can provide insight into the scientific theories and ensure safe navigation in the desert environment.

  • Photography: The distinct pattern of the Fairy Circles, particularly when seen from a distance or from the air, is a unique and beautiful sight, so make sure to bring a camera for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

  • Desert Precautions: Be prepared for the harsh desert conditions by wearing appropriate clothing, sunscreen, and plenty of water, especially if you plan to visit during the warmer months.

Where is it?

Kolmanskop is an abandoned diamond mining town located in the Namib Desert in southern Namibia. It is situated near the town of Lüderitz, about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the Atlantic coast. The town is in a remote area of the desert, and its location gives it an eerie, ghostly atmosphere.

What is it?

Kolmanskop was once a thriving diamond mining town during the early 20th century, specifically between 1908 and 1954. The town was founded after the discovery of diamonds in the area, and it grew rapidly with a population of miners, their families, and other workers who came to extract diamonds from the surrounding desert. At its peak, Kolmanskop was a bustling community with modern facilities, including a hospital, a school, and a casino, reflecting the wealth generated by the diamond mining operations. However, the diamond reserves in the region eventually dwindled, and the town was abandoned in 1954. Over time, the harsh desert sands encroached upon the buildings, and the town began to deteriorate. Today, Kolmanskop is a ghost town and a popular tourist attraction, offering a glimpse into the past. Visitors can take guided tours through the well-preserved buildings, which still contain vintage furniture, mining equipment, and personal items, allowing visitors to experience life during the town's heyday.

Best Time to Visit

  • Year-Round: Kolmanskop is open to visitors throughout the year, but the most favorable time to visit is during Namibia's cooler months (May to September), when the temperatures are more comfortable for exploring the town.

  • Morning or Late Afternoon: Early morning or late afternoon visits are ideal for photography, as the light is softer and the temperature is more moderate. Sunrise or sunset over the ghostly buildings adds to the eerie atmosphere.

Tips for the Trip

  • Guided Tours: To fully appreciate the history of Kolmanskop, it is best to take a guided tour, which provides fascinating insights into the town's past and the diamond mining operations.

  • Photography: The crumbling buildings and the desert landscape create incredible photo opportunities. However, be mindful of any photography restrictions in certain areas.

  • Pack for the Desert: Kolmanskop is located in a desert environment, so bring plenty of water, wear sunscreen, and wear appropriate clothing to protect against the sun and sand.
