Where is it?

Kasanka National Park is a small yet ecologically rich park located in the central region of Zambia, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park spans approximately 390 square kilometers and is characterized by wetlands, woodlands, and lush riverine landscapes. It is home to one of the most spectacular wildlife phenomena in the world: the annual migration of straw-colored fruit bats.

What is it?

Every year, between October and December, Kasanka National Park hosts the world’s largest mammal migration, where an estimated 10 million straw-colored fruit bats arrive in the park. These bats migrate from across Central Africa to feast on the ripe fruits of the park’s swamp forests. The bats roost in a small patch of woodland called Mushitu, where their sheer numbers turn the skies dark during sunrise and sunset as they leave and return to their roosting trees. The migration is not only a visual marvel but also a critical ecological event, as the bats play a key role in seed dispersal across vast distances.

Best Time to Visit

The peak of the bat migration is from late October to early December, with November offering the most dramatic displays. Early mornings and evenings are the best times to witness the bats in flight, creating breathtaking silhouettes against the golden and pink hues of the Zambian sky.

Why Should You Visit?

  • World’s Largest Mammal Migration: The sheer number of bats is awe-inspiring and a rare natural spectacle.

  • Ecological Importance: Learn about the bats' crucial role in maintaining the region’s biodiversity by spreading seeds and pollinating plants.

  • Wildlife Watching: While the bats are the main attraction, Kasanka also offers opportunities to see elephants, sitatungas (a swamp-dwelling antelope), hippos, crocodiles, and over 400 bird species.

  • Pristine Landscapes: The park's unspoiled environment, including its wetlands and forests, is a haven for nature lovers and photographers.

Tips for the Trip

  • Accommodation: Book early, as lodges like Wasa Lodge and Luwombwa Lodge are limited and fill up quickly during bat season. Alternatively, camping sites are available for those seeking a more adventurous stay.

  • Guided Tours: Join a guided tour or hire a park ranger for expert insights and the best viewing spots.

  • Gear: Bring binoculars, a camera with a good zoom lens, and mosquito repellent for a comfortable experience.

  • Extend Your Stay: Combine your visit with a trip to nearby Bangweulu Wetlands to see the rare shoebill stork.

Devil’s Pool, Victoria Falls

Where is it?

Devil’s Pool is a natural infinity pool located on the edge of Victoria Falls, one of the largest and most spectacular waterfalls in the world. The falls straddle the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, with Devil’s Pool situated on the Zambian side. It lies atop the Livingstone Island, at the precipice of the falls where the Zambezi River plunges 108 meters (354 feet) into the gorge below.

What is it?

Devil’s Pool is a unique and adrenaline-pumping natural attraction that allows visitors to swim right up to the edge of Victoria Falls. Formed by centuries of erosion, this rock pool has a natural barrier at its edge, creating a relatively safe area where adventurers can sit or lean out over the roaring cascade.

During the dry season, when water levels in the Zambezi River are low, the current becomes gentle enough for guided tours to safely access the pool. Visitors are escorted by experienced guides who ensure their safety while offering this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Devil’s Pool is during the dry season, from mid-August to late December, when water levels are low enough to access the pool safely. In other seasons, the river's high water levels make it too dangerous for swimming.

  • September to November is ideal for a thrilling yet manageable experience.

Why Should You Visit?

  • Unmatched Adventure: Feel the exhilarating rush of standing (or swimming) on the very edge of one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

  • Spectacular Views: Enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River gorge from a perspective that few people experience.

  • Exclusive Experience: Access to Devil’s Pool is limited to small guided groups, making it an intimate and unforgettable activity.

  • Combine Thrills with Serenity: The experience combines the excitement of swimming at the edge with moments of awe as you take in the beauty of the falls.

Tips for the Trip

  • Guided Tours: Book a tour with reputable operators such as Tongabezi or Wild Horizons, as they provide safe access and expert guides. Tours often include a boat ride to Livingstone Island and breakfast or lunch.

  • Clothing: Wear swimwear, but also bring a change of dry clothes, water shoes, and a waterproof camera for capturing the experience.

  • Fitness Level: A moderate level of fitness is required, as you'll need to swim a short distance in the river and navigate slippery rocks.

  • Permits: Ensure you have the necessary park entry fees and permits, usually included in guided tours.
