Pyramids
1. Great Pyramid of Giza, Egypt
The most famous pyramid in the world and the last remaining of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was built around 2560 BC for the Pharaoh Khufu and stands as a masterpiece of ancient engineering.
2. Pyramid of Khafre, Egypt
Also located in Giza, this pyramid appears taller than the Great Pyramid due to its elevated position, though it is slightly smaller. It was built for Pharaoh Khafre, son of Khufu.
3. Pyramid of Menkaure, Egypt
The smallest of the three pyramids at Giza, it was constructed for Pharaoh Menkaure. It’s notable for the remnants of granite casing on its lower levels, giving it a distinct appearance.
4. Pyramid of the Sun, Teotihuacan, Mexico
One of the largest pyramids in the world, this Mesoamerican structure in Teotihuacan dates back to around 200 AD. It was likely used for religious and astronomical purposes by the ancient city’s inhabitants.
5. Pyramid of the Moon, Teotihuacan, Mexico
Situated at the end of the Avenue of the Dead in Teotihuacan, this pyramid was used for rituals, including human sacrifices. It is slightly smaller than the Pyramid of the Sun but equally significant.
6. Step Pyramid of Djoser, Egypt
The earliest colossal stone building in Egypt and the first pyramid ever built, this step pyramid was constructed for Pharaoh Djoser by his architect Imhotep around 2700 BC in Saqqara. It consists of six stacked mastabas (rectangular structures).
7. Bent Pyramid, Egypt
This unique pyramid in Dahshur was built for Pharaoh Sneferu. Its odd bent shape is due to a change in the angle of inclination partway through construction, making it one of the most distinctive pyramids in Egypt.
8. Red Pyramid, Egypt
Also built by Pharaoh Sneferu in Dahshur, this is considered Egypt’s first successful smooth-sided pyramid. Its red hue comes from the reddish limestone used in its construction.
9. Meroë Pyramids, Sudan
These smaller, steeper pyramids were built for the rulers of the ancient Kingdom of Kush, south of Egypt. Though lesser-known, the Meroë pyramids are significant and numerous, totaling over 200.
10. Cholula Pyramid, Mexico
Known as the largest pyramid by volume in the world, this ancient Mesoamerican pyramid in Cholula, Mexico, was dedicated to the god Quetzalcoatl. It’s covered in vegetation, and a church now sits atop it.
